Success comes from stability. At McHenry County Housing Authority, we not only unlock the doors to affordable housing, we provide wraparound services needed in our community to keep people stably housed.
Working with our partners, we address the current and long-term needs of McHenry County residents through a number of programs, including housing, dental care, energy efficiency programs, rental assistance and home repair services.
The section 8 program would not exist without our partner landlords. The Housing Choice Voucher Program and its’ landlords help families afford decent, stable housing, avoid homelessness, and make ends meet.
We exist to assist low-income individuals and families to maintain an affordable, sanitary, and decent living environment, and to provide them with the means to avoid crisis situations and achieve economic independence.

All applicants must keep a current address on file. MCHA will occasionally mail documents or letters to a family that requires their response in order to remain on the waiting list. If you fail to respond to an MCHA mailing, you will be removed from the waiting list.
By using our Edit Contact Information tool, families will be able to update their contact information for all waiting lists other than GreenTrees and SilverTrees.
After entering your full name and social security number, you will be able to edit your email, phone number, and address.
Any other changes, such as a name change or adding/removing family members from your pre-application, must still be done in writing by completing a Change of Information Form.

Cary, Illinois
62 or older community
The McHenry County Housing Authority has partnered with the Cary Senior Living apartment complex in Cary, IL to offer a limited number of one-bedroom project-based units.
This is a 62 or older community. All applicants must have income at or below 30% of Area Median Income. The site-based waiting list will contain a preference for persons referred from the Illinois Statewide Referral Network. If a person referred from the Illinois Statewide Referral Network is determined eligible by MCHA, the person will receive a preference for the next available identified project-based voucher unit in Cary Senior Living. Individuals and families who do not claim this preference will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA.
Woodstock, Illinois
Family
The McHenry County Housing Authority has partnered with the Paths of Walnut Ridge to offer a limited number of one, two, and three-bedroom project-based units. All applicants for this complex must have income at or below 50% of Area Median Income. There will be a preference for applicants that work, or are participating in a work training program, within a 12 mile radius of the development, or applicants that are unemployed by reasons of age (62) or disability. Individuals and families who do not claim one of these preferences will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA.
Richmond, Illinois
55 or older community
The McHenry County Housing Authority has partnered with the Creekview apartment complex in Richmond, IL to offer a limited number of one-bedroom project-based units. This is a 55 or older community. All applicants must have income at or below 30% of Area Median Income. Individuals and families will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA.
Lake in the Hills, Illinois
Family
The McHenry County Housing Authority has partnered with the Villas of Lake in the Hills to offer a limited number of one, two and three-bedroom project-based units. All applicants for this complex must have income at or below 30% of Area Median Income. There will be a preference for applicants referred from the State of Illinois Referral Network directly to the landlord. If a person referred from the State of Illinois Referral Network directly to the landlord is determined eligible by MCHA, the person will receive a preference for the next available identified project-based voucher unit in Villas of Lake in the Hills. Individuals and families who do not claim this preference will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA.
Lake in the Hills, Illinois
(55 or older community)
The McHenry County Housing Authority has partnered with the Residences of Lake in the Hills to offer a limited number of studio and one-bedroom project-based units. This is a 55 or older community. All applicants for this complex must have income at or below 30% of Area Median Income. Preference will be given for persons with disabilities transitioning from a licensed nursing facility into a private rental. Individuals and families who do not claim this preference will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA.

The McHenry County Housing Authority has partnered with the Berkshire Johnsburg apartment complex in Johnsburg, IL to offer a limited number of one-bedroom project-based units. This is a 55 or older community. All applicants must have income at or below 30% of Area Median Income. The site based waiting list will contain a preference for applicants living, working, or hired to work in McHenry County, applicants referred to the landlord through the Statewide Referral Network (SRN), individual and applicant families that contain a veteran, or individual and applicant families that contain a person that is homeless and working with a McHenry County Continuum of Care homeless provider. Individuals and families who do not claim one of these preferences will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA.
Crystal Lake, Illinois
The McHenry County Housing Authority has partnered with the Residences of Crystal Lake apartment complex in Crystal Lake, IL to offer a limited number of one-bedroom project-based units. This is a 55 or older community. All applicants must have income at or below 30% of Area Median Income. The site-based waiting list will contain a preference for applicants referred to the landlord through the Statewide Referral Network (SRN), individual and applicant families that contain a veteran, or individual and applicant families that contain a person 62 years of age or older that is homeless and working with a McHenry County Continuum of Care homeless provider. Individuals and families who do not claim one of these preferences will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA.
Woodstock, Illinois
The Renaissance Apartments are located in a historical building, one block off of the Woodstock Square at 205 Dean Street, and offer studio, one and two-bedroom apartments. These apartments are affordable but not subsidized, and applicants must provide income documentation that demonstrates an ability to pay rent.

The McHenry County Housing Authority Public Housing Program consists of 23 3-bedroom single-family and duplex units throughout McHenry County.

All applicants must have income at or below 35% of Area Median Income. Individuals and families will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date/time when their application was received by MCHA.

All applicants must be 62 years of age or older for this community. All applicants must have income at or below 50% of Area Median Income. The waiting list is only open for two and three bedroom eligible applicants at this time. All applicants must have income at or below 30% of Area Median Income. The site-based waiting list will have a preference for applicants that live, work, or are hired to work in McHenry County (residency preference). Individuals and families who do not claim this preference will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date/time when their application was received by MCHA.
The site-based waiting list for 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom will contain a preference given first to veterans and next to people with a disability. Individuals and families who do not claim this preference will be placed on the waiting list in order of the date when their application was received by MCHA. Income limits are at 30% of AMI.
